It’s hard to find healthy snacks that are nutritional these days; even those claiming to be healthy are secretly packed full of sugar and salt. Then we think, I’ll make it myself but the online recipes require too much and aren’t even a snack. Here is the third of our healthy snacks series from Neil Bowman Training’s Healthy Snacks – Alternatives to Coffee.
Alternatives to Coffee – A Healthy Drink Rather Than a Healthy Snack
Although not a snack, fluids are just as important. Too many people are over reliant on sugary drinks and coffee. Here are some alternatives which are tasty and great for your health.
- Lemon Water
- Cucumber Water
- Ginger Water
Lemon Water – Alternatives to Coffee
Citrus fruits like lemons are high in vitamin C, a primary antioxidant that helps protect cells from damaging free radicals. Lemons being a superfood, is packed with vitamin C. Vitamin C have been found to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, and lower blood pressure.
All you need to do is add hot water and a slice of lemon to a glass. Simple right?
I recently came across some interesting information, sometimes you hear that you get the most yield from your lemon by pressing the lemon on the counter with your hand and roll it a little. In Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s The Bar Book: Elements of Cocktail Technique, he investigates this and finds that there’s no significant difference whether you do it or not.
Some words of warning when it comes to lemon water, lemon contains citric acid, which may erode tooth enamel. To counteract this, be sure to delude the lemon juice sufficiently. The risks should be minimal provided you aren’t adding excessive amounts of lemon to the water.
Cucumber Water – Alternatives to Coffee
Another additive to water which is high in vitamin C, which as we know is a primary antioxidant that helps protect cells from damaging free radicals. Cucumbers are rich in numerous other minerals and vitamins such as beta carotene and manganese.
Even easier than lemon water, cucumber water is just cold water and slices of cucumber. Unlike lemon water which is best served hot. Cucumber water requires cold water and the colder the better.
Ginger Water – Alternatives to Coffee
A Southeast Asia classic, ginger water is known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-nausea and digestion aid, blood sugar balancing, and weight loss effects. They also contain antioxidants and have been known to combat bad cholesterol.
This one takes the most effort, at least the way I make it. All you need to do is peel a small amount of ginger and chop it into finely sliced matchsticks. Add the ginger to a mug and pour boiling water on top.
The Healthiest Snack/Drink
Once you’ve tried them all individually, you may want to combine them to gain additional benefits along with additional flavours.
Bonus Apple Cider Vinegar
You may hear many people promoting apple cider vinegar as a drink, and they’re right in saying it’s healthy but in my personal opinion, it’s a horrible drink. I can’t recommend it myself to anyone because it’s just too strong and awful tasting. If you can, by all means do. It’s very healthy for you.
